Mixed test results from the latest Garmin, Magellan, TomTom navigators

With new products, it is easy to be lulled into believing that each updated model will be better than the one before. That’s not what we’re seeing in our portable GPS navigation tests.

Our latest test group features eight models, spanning from entry-level to full-featured, and the results are mixed. In fact, only half the units scored well enough to be recommended.

As the holiday season fast approaches, our GPS team has been logging serious miles testing the latest portable navigation devices from Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom, along with test driving a few iPhone apps. With the results posted online this week, we now have ratings on 169 current devices, and as the scores show, they are not all created equal.

Top Gear edition TomTom navigation comes with Stig Mode

TomTom just released a new satnav model, debuting the GO LIVE Top Gear edition.
The special edition provides directions via Jerry Clarkson, a Stig mode that shuts sound off, and it highlights special points of interest like race tracks.
