This Jam Handy Chevrolet video from 1937 – uploaded to YouTube by USAutoIndustry – has received a lot of attention over the years, in part because it does such an excellent job of explaining the inner workings of a differential, going through each and every step from the problem (how to get two linked wheels to turn at different speeds around a corner) to the end result. Jump to the two-minute mark if you want to skip all the motorcycle cop theatrics and get right to the tech.

Guns, gun, guns Svetlana67 | Dreamstime.com3Dlt, a 3-D printer template marketplace, has launched a firearm-safety design challenge. But at least one group is banking on 3-D printing being an answer to, rather than a source of, America’s gun-safety problems. Following Presid…

There was a lot of cool stuff on display at CES. In fact, there was a lot of stuff, period. Trying to find a single standout isn’t easy, especially when it is near-impossible to even see everything at the massive event. But there were a number of products and technologies that did get us excited.
Of course, the radio-controlled flying drone Parrot showed is pretty cool, as were balls that roll themselves around. But in the automotive realm, there was notable new technology and gadgets, even without a …

If you’re like Autosavant writers, you’re pretty intrigued by the Scion iQ’s tiny footprint and impressive utilization of space. However, the iQ, like the Smart ForTwo and Chevrolet Spark, struggled to hit the magic 40-mpg mark — despite its size and weight. For 2013, Scion has a solution to appease consumers looking for a microcar with the frugality to match.
Enter the 2013 Scion iQ EV. Cosmetically, it’s indistinguishable from the gas-powered iQ, save for a cha…

Ambient interior lighting, which uses discreet LED light guides to accent interior design cues and set a mood in a vehicle’s cabin, is increasingly popular. Buick has been a trend-setter in this space since the LaCrosse luxury sedan introduced the technology to its segment in 2009.
Every 2013 Buick features discreet Ice Blue lighting to set a comforting cabin mood. In vehicles like the Verano luxury sedan and the Regal luxury sport sedan, lighting comes from hidden sources in the vehicle headliner, but…

We’ll warn you in advance: if you don’t already lust for the McLaren MP4-12C supercar, you will after this video. We’ve toured a lot of automobile plants, all over the world, yet we’ve never seen one that looks quite like McLaren’s Production Center, where each MP4-12C is hand-assembled by a team of skilled craftsmen.
Notice that we didn’t say, “and robots” in the last sentence, because McLaren still believes that a dedicated and motivated employee can perform higher quality work than …

I feel a little perverted driving into Carson City—but it’s not because I’m in Nevada, about to slink out to some brothel. No, I’m in a silent and snow-crusted part of western Sweden, a place where apparently you can mow down pedestrians and get away with it. (more..)
