In case you’re wondering, I have a strange obsession with Chevrolet Suburbans. Not enough to actually buy one and schlep my family around in it, mind you, but as I’ve noted before, the Suburban plays an important role in my automotive upbringing. For most of my formative years, the Suburban was the family hauler of choice from my parents’ point of view. Sure, we detoured to the occasional custom van (groovy!) and even the occasional sedan (1988 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan, anyo…

So you think you need to carry seven people in comfort with decent economy but you don’t want to buy a minivan? Enter the three-row crossover. Thanks to stronger fuel economy regulations there are plenty of three-row CUVs to choose from, but you want something with a better brand name under 55-large, what does that do to the playing field? You’re left with the Lincoln MKT, Acura MDX, Volvo XC90, Buick Enclave and the newcomer in this phone booth sized segment: the 2013 Infiniti JX35. The new…

‘A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH’
Consumers looking for a low, entry-level priced mid-size sedan with contemporary looks, great fuel economy, a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and a model lineup equipped with exceptional levels of standard equipment and content featuring outstanding performance, might miss the all-new 2012 Chrysler 200 sedan. With fuel economy of up to 31 mpg highway, refined driving and handling dynamics, an available V6 engine (my test Limited had it) that produces 283 hp at 6,400 rpm an…

I’ve commented elsewhere on the fact that Japanese cars, even the finest of them, have always suffered from a certain blandness, not to say lack of character, so that you could be driving your Acura, Infiniti, or Lexus along a thoroughfare teeming with car lovers (an unlikely scenario, admittedly) and not a single head would turn, whereas the driver of, say, an aging Jaguar S-Type would draw the gaze of the most jaded. (I know whereof I speak, being that driver.) Face it: Jags have character and …

Back when I reviewed the Scion FR-S, I wrapped up by saying I’d want to check out the latest Miata before I passed judgment on the bang-per-buck value of the Subuyopet. So, I called up the PR flacks at Mazda: “Hey, remember how I didn’t totally trash the CX-5 I wrote about in July? Yeah, so now the entire Toyo Cork Kogyo organization owes me, which means I need a Daimyo Class ticket on the next flight to Tokyo, a BLACK TUNED MX-5 waiting for me, and an honor guard of eight dekatoras to …

Wii U NintendoA new Wii, a little bit like the last Wii, that gains a surprising amount from what sounds like a gimmick–even if every game doesn’t take advantage of that. The big criticism with Nintendo consoles is that they’re engineered for kids. The original Wii was innovative and flat-out fun enough to make it all work–it seemed charming rather than simplistic. But the new Nintendo console, the Wii U, is careful not to seem too playful and innocent–launch titles, for example, have you playing as a…

Since its introduction in 2006 as the successor to the Golf Cabriolet, the Volkswagen Eos has flown under the radar and hasn’t really gotten much recognition. But the Eos still offers practical daily transportation and sporty, top-down fun. The Eos is considered a subcompact, and its wheelbase and width are identical to Volkswagen’s GTI and Jetta models. The 2012 Volkswagen Eos has been updated with fresh styling, new interior appointments and more standard equipment.
Upon first glance o…

About a year ago, our own Kevin Gordon posed a question about the Progressive Snapshot – basically, asking whether it was worthwhile to allow “spying for savings.” In the six years that Autosavant has been online, this is the most-viewed and most-commented post ever. In fact, if you Google “progressive snapshot” (without quotes) this article is on the first page of the results. Though many of the 155 comments to date are not in favor of the device or the concept …

I would forgive you in an instant if you hadn’t noticed the changes happening at the entry-level side of Volvo’s offerings in North America. The compact S40/V50 sedan and wagon quietly departed here two years ago, replaced with the sublime V40, which is not available here. Now comes news the two door hatch C30, which had hoped to steal sales away from the MINI Cooper but barely made a ripple here will also be exiting the stage. So, what then is the entry-level Volvo?
Well, that leaves the S6…
