While I am a card carrying member of the so-called indifferent Generation X, I am quite a nostalgic person. It’s why I listen to Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra, live in a 1920′s beach cottage and own a classic Porsche. And being a car guy, nothing is more nostalgic than a Jeep-I mean a real Jeep. Being a car guy, cars are significant to me in a major way, even more so when they intermingle with major life events. We love to brag about horsepower and 0-60 times, but the magic and romance o…

The CX-5 was a great idea when it was introduced for 2013 – nimble, practical, roomy – but it suffered from a sluggish engine that put a damper on the whole thing. For 2014, there's a second powertrain choice that makes everything better. Find out more in my Sympatico Autos story by clicking here.

The Lexus GS is the fourth generation of the mid-size sport-luxury sedan and is all-new for the 2013 model year. This week we’ll be testing the substantially revised GS 450h hybrid variant that is the fastest and most fuel-efficient in the GS range. The new GS GS 450h is sporty and can be considered a true sport sedan as all Lexus GS models are rear-wheel drive. The GS range is designed for driving enthusiasts looking for more than just a luxury ride. The GS 450h hybrid offers the best of …

The Subaru Forester has been redesigned for 2014, including a new turbo engine and improved transmission choices. I went out to Vancouver Island to drive it, and came back very impressed with it overall. Find out more at Sympatico Autos by clicking here.

For the 2013 model year, the Lexus ES350 is in its seventh-generation and is slightly larger outside and roomier inside. The 2013 Lexus ES offers more features and for the first time there is a hybrid version. This week we’ll be testing the standard model with the gas V6 engine. While the 2013 ES350 is certainly been update both inside and out, it still keeps plenty of the components that has made it a popular car for the Lexus brand. It’s been updated, but not to the point of being a d…

Cars are not simply about getting from Point A to Point B. Cars can define a time in history, influence our culture, even change our perception of what we want, or expect from a car. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Volkswagen Beetle stands in an elite group of one of the most significant automobiles of the 20th century. Yet, the Beetle rests a bit uncomfortably from the very country who invented it. And this is where automotive culture kicks in. The history of the Beetle is well known. Adolf Hitler ask…

Though I rarely watch it anymore, I’m a fan of The Simpsons. Fox’s long-running animated sitcom about a “typical” American family is currently in its 24th season, so for 24 seasons, the show’s protagonist, Homer Simpson, never been respected. For instance, in April 2008, Ford’s then-head of product development, Derrick Kuzak, said that the Taurus would be shedding its “Homer Simpson” looks for “Superman” looks. Though the 2010 Tauru…

Let’s face facts-Chevy has been very awkward about sub-compact cars since the 1980′s, when they started importing Korean cars badged as Chevy’s. There was a total disconnect from the brand with these little cars, and it did not help that the cars themselves were, at best, average. But with a post-bailout GM, the light bulb seems to have been lit. An entry level subcompact needs to be offered in a mainstream brand like Chevy, but it has to, in simple terms, be a Chevy. The Spark comes t…

It's small, it's cute, and while some of its competitors are better vehicles, I still like the Trax on its own merit — well, all except for a seriously awful method of controlling the stereo. Read more in my Sympatico Autos review by clicking here.
