How do you update the model that started the whole small car-based SUV craze? If you’re Toyota and you’re updating the RAV4, you keep the successful basic recipe but tweak the ingredients.
Some of the changes are welcomed, like the elimination of the side-hinged tailgate and the outside-mounted spare tire. The move from a dated four-speed automatic transmission to a six-speed automatic is also a plus. Same goes for the addition of a standard backup camera.
But there’s a disappointing change: the optio…

The redesigned Escape marks a dramatic improvement over the dated, unrefined model it replaces, elevating the model to the upper echelon of small SUVs.
For our tests, we bought two examples: Escape SE ($28,040) and Escape Titanium ($36,600). The modestly equipped SE represents the heart of the Escape market, with its 173-hp, 1.6-liter engine and Sync system. Even at that price, it lacks a sunroof, power driver’s seat and backup camera—features commonly found on similar SUVs that cost thousands le…

More stylish than your average plumber’s van, the redesigned Transit Connect gets a smoother, less upright look than the boxy small cargo van it replaces, with a front-end treatment reminiscent of the Focus and Fiesta small cars.
The more car-like design continues inside, with promised better fit and finish, more technology, and new driver-assistance features.
The redesigned Transit Connect goes on sale in Europe and the United States in late 2013.
Developed for markets around the world, it will be…

Nissan revealed its all-new Pathfinder yesterday, ahead of its November rollout to dealerships. The new three-row SUV is based on the same car-platform as the Murano and the Infiniti JX. It replaces an aging truck-based SUV that returned poor fuel economy and had cramped interior space in our testing.
Perhaps the new Pathfinder’s neatest party-trick, however, is Nissan’s Latch and Glide right-hand second row seat that tilts forward and slides out of the way, even with a child seat fully attached, for …

Sales of the 2012 Toyota Yaris were up 140 percent in April and 70 percent for the year. It appears the completely redesigned Yaris is already a hit with buyers. The 2012 model is larger than the previous model with a wheelbase that is longer by 2 inches and overall length has grown by 2.9 inches. The all-new 2012 Yaris is more appealing with its sportier looks and lower roofline which helps make it more aerodynamic.
More standard features and cargo space inside

Lexus has released more details about the upcoming redesign of its bread-and-butter ES sedan. For the first time, the ES will be available with a four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain in the ES300h—borrowed from platform-mate Toyota Camry. The ES350 will employ the Camry’s 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6.
The hybrid will deliver an EPA-estimated 40 mpg city and 39 highway, for a combined 39 mpg overall. (We got 38 mpg overall with our Camry Hybrid.) The ES 350 is rated at 21/31/24. Both ES versions will have a …

Remember the Aston Martin Lagonda Concept? If you don’t, be thankful. It is a vehicle who nobody liked in the first place, and its styling hasn’t worn well with time. Lagonda was a design study by Aston Martin, who was looking to launch Lagonda as a separate brand in order to sell luxury SUVs. The reception it received was strikingly similar to the way everyone reacted to the Bentley EXP 9 F Concept this past March.
While Aston expanded its reach with the Rapide (and hideous Cygnet…), …
