Connecticut Race Team Tries for 300 MPH at Bonneville, Races for Autism Research

For drivers on the Bonneville Salt Flats, 100 mph is slow, 200 mph is normal, and 300 mph is the ultimate goal. For one Connecticut-based race team, however, reaching 300 mph in their tuned lakester will result in a sizable donation to autism research.
The team is comprised of Bob Dauernheim, owner and constructor of Team 608, a Connecticut-based amateur race team that raises money for charity. It’ll be racing a custom-made lakester open-wheel racer in this year’s Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt F…

Vintage racing may come to Put-in-Bay as part of the Road Races Reunion

Ever since organizers of the Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion began gathering vintage race cars on the Lake Erie islands two years ago, they’ve always had it in the back of their minds to bring actual vintage racing to the site of one of America’s least-known road racing events. This year’s reunion brings them closer to that goal.
The third annual reunion, which will take place June 27-29, will add two new events to the reminiscing that has marked the previous get-togethers: First are the…

Porsche Canada press release

Video Find: Peugeot EX1 Electric Concept Races ‘Round the ‘Ring

Peugeot’s electric EX1 concept may have tackled the Nürburgring last week, but footage of the record-setting run didn’t make its way online until now.
To jog your memory, the EX1 — which was first unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show — looped the Nürburgring last week in 9 minutes and one seconds, posting an average speed of 86 mph. That bested the previous EV lap record — set by a modified Mini E — by almost 50 seconds.
Having stunned showgoers and smashed la…

Vanderbilt Cup historian to speak on the famed Long Island races

Hemmings reader Mark Axen recently sent us the link to an excellent site that features information, images and even video of the Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904-1910.
Much of the content for the site comes from the collection of historian and author Howard Kroplick, whose books include The Long Island Motor Parkway and Vanderbilt Races of Long Island.
Kroplick, who is also a car enthusiast and owner of the Alco-6 Black Beast race car that won the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Races, wi…

Scott Goodyear races Infiniti IPL G Coupe against a helicopter

We’re all pretty used to car companies putting out web videos with the hope that they’ll go viral and Nissan has been at the forefront of creating these videos. Most of them are highly produced commercials, that don’t have a lot of real world feel to them. Infiniti Canada has just put out a series of 3 new videos to promote the IPL line.
These shorts have been put together with the help of friend of The Garage, Chris Bye, at his Niagara on the Lake based drive facility. I can pretty mu…

Mercedes Races Cars Fueled By Twitter

In an effort to build brand image amongst groups of people that have no interest in cars, Mercedes Benz is hosting a race in cars powered by Twitter posts and vaguely linked to d-list celebrities. If that doesn’t make much sense to you, it’s ok, you aren’t the market they are shooting for anyway.
Sounding more like a VH1 reality show than anything automotive related, The MB Tweet Race will pit four teams against each other in a popularity contest that would make a home coming queen race, look like…
