Ford’s research centre: Lightweight materials, and plastic from money

I recently toured some of Ford's Research and Advanced Engineering complex in Dearborn, Michigan, and part of my visit focused on lightweight components and new materials. Here's one: your new car may one day be made of money. Find out more at Sympatico Autos by clicking here.

Sept. 3rd Weekly Thread–Light Bulbs, Plastic Flags, SALE Signs

It's Labor Day Weekend, summer's about over, leaves are already falling… and we all know what that means.

Yes folks, step right up and get a great deal on that new car or truck you've been looking for. There are Zero % interest rates, special lease agreements may apply, or if you just hit the lottery, we'll take a little extra off the top.
We hear this every year from the car makers, usually with a catchy catch phrase to go along. And these slogans try to transmit the personality of th…

Plastic is Fantastic: Corvette Celebrates 60 Years of Advanced Lightweight Construction Materials

One can argue that the horsepower game between sports cars manufacturers is really getting out of control. Proof, if any was needed, is the latest crop of supercars like the Ferrari F12berlinetta and the Lamborghini Aventador, to name just two, that have an output which, not so long ago, would be suited to a Formula 1 car. And that’s without considering the likes of the Bugatti Veyron and the upcoming Ferrari F70 and Porsche 918 Spyder… On the other hand, you can never have too much of a good thing

New Plastic Bleeds Red When Scratched, Then Heals Itself Like Skin

Broken Plastic Joybot
Self-healing materials will eventually fix anything from cell phone screens to car fenders, enabling surfaces to heal on their own in the presence of different types of light. But none of the earlier prototypes we’ve seen work quite like this new plastic: It bleeds red at the site of injury. Then it heals itself, inspired by the properties of tree trunks and human skin.

Turning People Into Plastic

Plastic Surgery Click here to get a bigger view of this amazing image. Reuters/Sheng Li
At Dalian Hoffen Bio-Technique Company in northern China, people turn other people into plastic. Plastination is a four-step process during which polymers replace water and fat molecules in biological specimens.
Plastinated bodies don’t decompose, and museums and medical schools can display them with exposed muscles, veins and brains in exhibits around the world. One such exhibit, called “Bodies,” has visited dozens …

Video: MakerBot Replicator Prints a Plastic Bust of Stephen Colbert

The new MakerBot is bigger and more capable than ever before
I just stopped by MakerBot’s far-flung booth somewhere in the back caverns of CES (I believe it may technically be in Arizona) to check out their new Replicator 3-D printer. Check out the video below–pretty sure that’s a bust of Stephen Colbert being slowly brought to life with swirling circles of molten plastic.

The Replicator is the newest MakerBot, a relatively inexpensive 3-D printer that can print in either ABS (the same plastic LEGO use…

25 recycled plastic bottles used in carpeting of each 2013 Ford Escape

Before I begin, I just want to let you know that the blue silhouette you see above is our first official teaser of the new Ford Escape. Either way, Ford is getting greener with a new carpeting material for the upcoming Escape model. Empty plastic bottles sized 25-30 ounces, will be used by the automotive company to create carpet for every new Escape produced for the first time in an SUV.
The new carpeting has been inspected for durability by running tests that take 10 to 15 minutes but simulate 5 years …

Canadian professor keen on plastic car parts made from cows that have suffered from being Mad

Associate Professor at the Universe of Alberta’s Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Science, David Bressler, is all about conservation, and believes that automakers can do their part, as well.
Leather is an increasingly popular material in today’s cars, covering everything from seats to floor mats and more. Bressler believes that the interior parts that are generally made from plastic can be replaced with cow parts that are usually disposed of.
Cow parts from cows that have suff…
