Directional Gyroscope That’s not going to fit in your iPhone. Hannes Grobe, Wikimedia Commons
Israeli researchers have created the tiniest-ever optical gyroscopes, as small as a grain of sand, but still maintaining the keen accuracy of their counterparts hundreds of times larger. Optical gyroscopes are generally used for navigation in airplanes, ships and satellites, in which they track movement without reference to external navigation points, by measuring the vehicle’s rotation rate and linear accelera…

United States Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and President Barack Obama
During a national summit on distracted driving, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood suggested that cell phones should come with a cigarette-style warning label showing users the dangers of distracted driving. He said that offering warnings at the time of purchase would make more sense.
“When you go in to buy your phone, maybe there’s a big warning label on the box: Do not use this device while driving,” LaH…

The range of vehicle diagnostic tools available for mobile phones is expanding. We covered some upcoming models at last year’s Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association convention.
Now PLX, one of the device-makers we covered there, is releasing new technology for phones based on the Google Android operating system. As with other PLX Kiwi models, if your car’s check-engine comes on, you can plug the device into the on-board diagnostic (OBD II) port that has …

SoBi’s Bike Share Locking Mechanism SoBi
Social bike programs have launched in metropolitan areas around the world with mixed results (for instance, Paris’s Vélib” program has enjoyed decent ridership but thousands of bikes have been stolen). But a public bicycle program called SoBi (Social Bicycle) aims to drive down the public cost of bike sharing systems while making it much more convenient to pick up and drop off bikes, using clever technology.
Essentially, SoBi attaches GPS and transmitter-ena…

A common complaint about alternative-fuel vehicles is that it's difficult to find a station to refuel one. Compared to gasoline, there are relatively few stations that sell E85 ethanol, compressed natural gas, or hydrogen to consumers. And while electric-car charging stations are expanding rapidly, they are still a rare sight on American roads today. The U.S. Department of Energy is aiming to change that with a new mobile website to help drivers of all types of alternative-fuel vehicles find p…

Robots can act out phone users’ feelings
Canadian researchers trying to integrate robots into our lives have come up with a pair of dancing, crying cell phone ‘bots. The robots, called Callo and Cally, are cell phones with limbs.
Cally stands about 7 inches high and walks, dances and mimics human behavior. Callo stands about 9 inches tall, and his face, which is a cell phone display screen, shows human facial expressions when he receives text-messaged emotions. When he receives a smile emoticon, Callo s…

What we regularly refer to as “night vision goggles” are actually less like goggles and more like heavy, bulky (and outrageously expensive) pieces of machinery. But DARPA funded research at the U. of Florida has adapted technology regularly found in flat-screen OLED televisions to create a thin film that turns any infrared signal into visible light, which could integrate cheap night vision tech into car windshields, cell phone cameras and even regular eyeglasses.
Described in the journal Advanced Mater…

I turned my rant against cell phones into a story, which is now in the Toronto Star. You can find it by clicking here.
Angry emails from the pro-phone crowd are coming in even as we speak. It seems ya just can't fix dumb.
