Through all of the trials and hardships the city of Detroit has gone through, the iconic Packard plant has stood by as a reminder of how far the city has fallen from its past glories. The graffiti riddled property has become a mecca for urban explorers, artists and photographers since being abandoned a decade or so ago.
While most abandoned properties receive random visits from security companies, the owners of the former Packard plant have taken a somewhat unorthodox approach. Urban “Farmer”…

In a post from Autoblog today, plans were announced to raze the massive 3.5 million square foot Packard plant in Detroit, Michigan. A car has not rolled off the assembly line since 1958, but this leviathan automotive complex has stood for decades, idle and crumbling. The Packard plant was built in 1903, and covers two entire city blocks. To add to the mystique of the Packard complex, there is an underground tunnel system.
Packard was once one of the premier American automotive makers. When I get the chan…

Here’s something that epitomizes a quality car showing up at auction. This is a 1930 Packard Model 745 seven-passenger touring car, amply accessorized, restored in 1977 by the late Bob Turnquist and his team at Hibernia Auto Restorations in New Jersey. Since then, it’s added just 3,600 miles.
According to Leake Auction Company, which plans to sell the car at its forthcoming Dallas auction, the bare body came from Dietrich. It was then shipped on in an unfinished state to Packard, which paint…

This big black 1939 Packard Touring Sedan was easily the most imposing thing at last Saturday's Lincoln Highway Car Show. It's in unrestored original condition, mechanically sound and solid, but showing its age a bit in things like worn rubber on the running boards and little dings and cracks in the paint. On the other hand, I hope I look this good when I'm 72.
In 1939, Packard was every bit as prestigious as Cadillac, if not more so. This car isn't a purpose-built limousine, but never…

It was thought that technical innovation would help save Packard toward the end. Buying Studebaker back in 1954 didn’t exactly help turn around the fortunes of the grand old marque, so for the 1956 model year, the company invested in larger engines, pushbutton automatic transmissions and limited-slip differentials. It even introduced a new model, the Executive, a blending of senior Packard and Clipper design cues, and showed off Dick Teague’s Predictor concept car. None of it helped, as sale…

Congratulations go this morning to Michael DeAngelis of Stamford, Connecticut, whose big brassy 1911 Packard Model 30 took home the Best in Show award at the fifth annual New England Concours d’Elegance this weekend. From the moment the Packard rumbled onto the field and took its place in the Pre-War class, crowds swarmed the Packard to marvel at its size and shine. Even more impressive than the car itself was the fact that Michael wrapped up its four-year restoratio…

Margaret Dunning, who is 101, owns several cars, but her favorite is a 1930 Packard 740 roadster, which she will be showing at the Concours d’Élégance of America.
