Can the MKZ save the Lincoln brand? We’re about to find out

We’ve just taken delivery of two 2013 Lincoln MKZs for our test program. Why two? We bought one of the standard, 231-hp EcoBoost four-cylinder models, as well as the 188-hp hybrid version. We’re curious to see how Ford’s upscale Lincoln brand is approaching luxury with a green twist.

The MKZ is a significant model, representing a potential turning point for the brand. Underscoring the importance of the MKZ: The last 20 years or so haven’t been kind to Ford’s top brand. Our previous blogs have documente…

Report: Next generation Lincoln Navigator to drop V8 for EcoBoost V6, Expedition to retain V8

Hey, you know Ford’s T1 SUVs? Yea, the gynormous three-ton utilitarian ‘Murikan-tastic SUVs, the Ford Expedition and sister Lincoln Navigator? Yup, they’re still around despite the market’s focus on fuel-efficient crossover SUVs.
MotorTrend reports that Lincoln’s global director, Matt VanDyke, has said that the Navigator will be getting a redesign, which means equipping it with Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6—the same one seeing duty in the current Ford F150—to curtail woes over fuel efficiency a…

First drive video: Stylish Lincoln MKZ impresses

The Lincoln brand has been in trouble for years. Lincoln models have been too similar to their Ford counterparts to make it as credible luxury cars, and no amount of cosmetics and feature enhancements have made them feel all that special. Ford’s latest gambit is renaming its luxury division The Lincoln Motor Company. There needs to be more than a name-change to turn Lincoln’s fortunes around. It will take product.

That brings us to the MKZ, the first outing for The Lincoln Motor Company and possibly a …

Car (Truck) Disgust: 2002 Lincoln Blackwood

We here at Car Lust haven't done a "Car Disgust"
post in a while. That's because these posts are usually reserved for
the most vile aberrations of automotive expression, the lowest of the
low, cars that either have the soul of the devil, or maybe no soul at
all.
Car Disgust also includes vehicles so poorly designed or rebadged that the public takes one look, and either laughs histerically, runs away from them, or shrieks in terror en masse. Or worse, we aren't affected at all.
A…

Report: Lincoln shipping MKZs to MI for second quality check, put on backorder

Bloomberg reports that Lincoln has had its worst sales month in 32 years, moving only just 4,191 cars and sport-utility vehicles. And that’s because Ford says that there have been shortages caused by missed validation processes for quality assurance during production at Ford’s factory in Hermosillo, Mexico. There, the new MKZ and the Ford Fusion are built.

As a result, Ford has been forced to ship some of its production from Mexico to Lincoln’s main plant in Flat Rock, Michigan for a secondary qua…

Lincoln Sending MKZs from Mexico to Michigan for Quality Checks

After several recalls on its best-selling Ford Escape and Fusion models, Ford is taking it slowly and carefully with the launch of the Lincoln MKZ. In an unprecedented step, Ford is reportedly shipping MKZs, which are built in Hermosillo, Mexico, to Flat Rock, Michigan, for quality validation, according to a Bloomberg report. Flat Rock is [...]

Can Lincoln Pull Off Its ‘Steer The Script’ Superbowl Ad?

Lincoln wants its customers to know that it’s a new car company, with new products and a new way of thinking. To demonstrate this philosophy, Lincoln will be attempting an entirely new concept to advertise at this year’s Super Bowl XLVII.
Rather than fund a big-budget clip that entertains and amazes, Lincoln turned to its fans on Twitter (which, at the risk of sounding sarcastic, has to be something of a small population). These followers would Tweet road trip stories, to be sorted, condensed and t…

Lincoln MKC Concept Premiering at 2013 NAIAS

As part of a current automotive trend, even luxury carmakers have been embracing downsized entries for the North American marketplace. Recently dubbing themselves officially as “The Lincoln Motor Company”, Ford Motor Company’s premium vehicle line-up has been holding out for a small car to better introduce buyers to their long-standing but overlooked charm.
The plans for a small Lincoln have been part of the Ford luxury brand’s aspirations since 2010. Originally, it seemed that Lincol…

Lincoln MKC Concept Photos and Info: It’s an Escape—to Luxury! [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

When we first caught wind of Lincoln’s forthcoming utelet, we welcomed the news that it would likely use Ford’s global C-segment platform that also underpins the Escape and the Focus. Both of those vehicles are good, so if Lincoln can’t have unique mechanicals, as least it’s got good bones to build on; the interesting part would be how Lincoln goes about evolving the MKC from well-received Ford to entry-luxury contender. Why is Lincoln Now The Lincoln Motor Company? We Ask Matt VanDyke, Its New Global Director

As if being on the penny hadn’t made Abraham Lincoln ubiquitous enough, our 16th president has moved into the non-copper world of motion pictures. Honest Abe is the focus of two biographic films this year—one that may have stretched the true extent to which he hunted vampires—and, starting earlier this month, he’s making a cameo in an ad for his namesake automaker. “Introducing The Lincoln Motor Company,” the TV spot ends. It’s not quite as old-fashioned as a Civil War
