After Friday’s car inspections at the Heaps In the Heart of Texas 24 Hours of LeMons, the smart money said that the Hell’s Treehuggers Toyo-Davidson would blow up within seconds of going “potato-potato-potato” onto the race track. You know what? The smart money also says that Nissan Z Cars fall apart on race tracks, and the end of the first day of racing shows the Back To The Past 300ZX leading the field… and the Harley-Davidson Sportster-powered Prius still in working order.

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET, POLE WINNER:
WERE YOU MEDITATING, USING THE FORCE OR SOMETHING STAYING IN YOUR CAR? "I was just watching everybody go by and catch a glimpse of the Jumbotron over there and see where they pop up on the board. I’ve watched more interviews where a guy climbs out of a race car to a microphone, and just at that point in time, they fall to second. I didn’t want it to happen. I knew I put down a good lap. Very proud of the effort my Lowe’s team put into this race…

After seeing some very promising machinery during the Friday prerace inspections, we were geared up for an exciting Saturday race session. However, things got a little more exciting than we’d hoped for, with blinding sheets of rain gushing down for much of the day and legions of race cars spinning off into the swampy muck surrounding the racing surface at MSR Houston. When the checkered flag finally came out, a dominating Datsun stood in the lead.
The Z-Wrecks ’81 280ZX took the win on laps…

Thunderhill Raceway is known for extreme weather conditions, summer and winter, but the temperatures today stayed (barely) out of the triple-digit range. That meant that the number of overstressed engines dumping their innards on the tarmac was (very slightly) lower than expected. When the checkered flag ended Saturday’s race session, we were looking at a very tight BMW-Mazda-Nissan battle at the top of the standings. Read full story »

First of all, we need to make it clear how disappointed we are that Car and Driver legend Csaba Csere has not made an appearance at the race we (sort of) named after him. He must have more important things to do, but we can’t imagine what could be more important than watching Fiat’s miserably underpowered mid-engined sports car stomp on a bunch of BMWs and Porsches at Road America. Sure, this X1/9 has a bit more power than it had when it came from the factory, thanks to the 228-horsepower Al…

Twelve hours into the third annual Arse Freeze-a-Palooza 24 Hours of LeMons, we’ve seen the top of the standings settle into a trio of the usual contending suspects, after many hours of a dozen or so quick cars duking it out for the top spots. Read full story »

With 130 entries in the third annual Capitol Offense 24 Hours of LeMons, you figure that maybe you’ll get a better shot at a race leader not drawn from the usual pool of Neons, BMW 325s, and various Honda Civic family members… but nobody expected to see a Fox-platform Cougar beating all the other cars at the end of the first day’s race session. The first day of the ’12 Showroom-Schlock Shootout 24 Hours of LeMons dawned hot and muggy and stayed that way until the checkered flag waved at 7:00 PM. The lead changed frequently during the day, with two former Midwest Region winners battling a couple of BMW E30s and a Porsche 944 for the top position. At this point, the fast-but-fragile Clueless Racing Honda CRX holds a two-lap lead. Read full story »

The compact sales race saw more jockeying for the lead in the month of May. This time it was the 2012 Honda Civic that beat out the Toyota Corolla for the sales crown, with the Ford Focus coming in a distant third place to the Japanese heavyweights. The Honda Civic earned its first place slot [...]
