High-Speed Data Link Made from Laser Pointers Works Where Wi-Fi Won’t

High Speed Optical Networks from Laser Pointers Netweb via Wikimedia
Wi-Fi isn’t always practical–in places like hospitals or labs, for instance, where radio transmitters are prohibited–and physical USB cables can be slow and cumbersome as well. So engineers at National Taipei University of Technology have built a low-cost, easy to implement optical setup that can beam data across rooms twice as fast as USB 2.0 technology using conventional laser pointers.
The simple setup costs only about $600 to bui…

NASA’s Laser Communications System Will Enable High-Speed Transmissions From Mars

NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), Visualized NASA
NASA is spending roughly $175 million on three new technology demonstration projects, one of which is aiming to take HD data streaming to Mars. The Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) will explore reliable optical communications technologies that could boost data rates between Earth and deep space by a couple of orders of magnitude.
The premise is simple enough: for the same mass, size, and power load an optical communic…

Just Release It Already! BMW Previews Its Next M5 in Video of High-Speed Track Testing

While BMW has already shown us its upcoming M5 über sedan in “concept” form at this year’s Shanghai auto show, the automaker continues to tease us with videos of prototype vehicles in various stages of development. Earlier vids included a 30-minute smorgasbord of M5 test mules romping in the Alps and a brief clip of an M5 roaring through a dark tunnel in a sort of polar-bear-blinking-in-a-snowstorm game, in which viewers could really only see the car’s lit headlights and, well, darkness. This n…

Connecting the country: Investing in high-speed

With an investment of over $2 billion, the Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced funding for 22 projects in 15 states around the country aimed at developing a high-speed rail system. Besides allowing people and goods to travel more quickly and cheaper, the projects will also stimulate jobs, manufacturing, and help jump-start the economy in these areas.

Another impact will be to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by giving people other safe and reliable options for transport besides the …

High-Speed Rail Creeps Forward, With $2.4 Billion in Federal Funding Given to Projects in 23 States

Japan’s Shinkansen Bullet Train Parag.naik via Wikimedia
The push for high-speed rail in America is picking up speed — it’s just happening really, really slowly. Yesterday, efforts to connect American cities with new high-speed passenger rail links received a shot in the arm to the tune of $2.4 billion in federal funding for 54 projects in 23 states. And while it’s not even close to enough to push America’s rail system toward the modern railways linking Asian and European cities, it is a baby step in t…
