You could say that a Formula 1 driver will find it hard to have fun in a series-production road car, after being used to F1's extreme sensations. But we’re talking here about the 570HP Ferrari 458 Italia, arguably one of the best mid-engine sports cars available on the market right now. Scuderia Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa took the car for a spin around the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona to see how it handles. Read more »

The sad story of Saab's demise has been discussed many times before, and aside from all of the historical value of the brand, there is also another aspect which is often overlooked. While Saab may have been owned by GM and forced to use various bits and parts from Opel/Vauxhall , the new 9-5 showed real promise. If it would have been thoroughly finished when launched, it could have provided the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class with some competition. Read more »

When I helped Volkswagen launch its Golf GTI in 1976, Volkswagen wanted to make only 5,000. They wanted to make even less, actually, but 5,000 were needed for homologation as a racer. Volkswagen was convinced that no mentally stable person would be nuts enough to buy a little car like that with a 110 hp engine. Boy were they ever wrong. It took well into the 80’s for the Golf GTI to come to America. When I said “Americans love muscle cars,” the answer was: “Haven’t you heard? 55 miles an hour…

What Is That Snapper Really? OceanaDNA testing of retail seafood finds that fish fraud is rampant around the nation. Oceana, an organization dedicated to ocean conservation, has bought over 1,200 samples of fish from restaurants and stores around the country, and submitted them to DNA testing to identify their species. The final report, released today, shows that almost all fish labeled as snapper is not snapper; “white tuna” is really escolar (which is banned in Italy and Japan for its gastric volatili…

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4MATIC – image: Mercedes-Benz
According to numbers reported by the automakers at the close of last year, BMW sold 281,460 cars in the United States, excluding its MINI brand. Luxury rival Mercedes-Benz sold 274,134 cars on these shores in 2012, excluding both Smart and its family of Sprinter vans.
BMW was quick to promote the fact that it outsold Mercedes for the second year in a row, and the issue seemed to be over. Until yesterday, that is, when Mercedes-Benz USA presid…

An evocative car name is sometimes nearly as important as the quality of the car itself. Take the Ford Mustang — the muscle car’s name was inspired by executive stylist John Najjar, recalling the P-51 Mustang fighter plane from World War II. Had the Mustang been given a different name, would it still have as [...]

Rolls-Royce has released a second teaser photo of its upcoming Wraith coupe, a.k.a. the two-door version of the Ghost sedan.
A shot the company sent out three weeks ago was more revealing—it provided a glimpse of the car’s aggressively sloped roofline—but this shadowy image provides little more than a glimpse at the car’s twin trapezoidal exhaust finishers. Well, it also shows off, as Rolls puts it, the Wraith’s “muscular rear haunches,” a description we find di…
