Thread of the Day: How Much Speed Would You Sacrifice for Fuel Economy?

Volkswagen’s XL1 Concept is claimed to achieve 261.3 mpg but for many enthusiasts, that’s great…as long as someone else is buying it. If the XL1 were already a production vehicle, its 0-62 mph acceleration time of 11.9 seconds suggests it would be able to keep up with traffic with its 0.8-liter two-cylinder diesel engine mated …   Read full blog

EPA approves E15 fuel, raises concerns

On Friday, the EPA released a long-awaited decision allowing the use of 15-percent ethanol in regular gasoline to be burned in cars made from 2001 to 2006. The move is expected to lead to gas stations selling the fuel, known as E15, at specially labeled pumps around the country–but it does not require a blend greater than E10. (Read: “Move over E85, here comes E15. EPA proposes adding more ethanol to gasoline blends.”)Gas station owners, as well as makers of boats, snowmobiles, and yard equipment…

New Split-Cycle Engine Design Shown To Improve Fuel Economy By 50 Percent

Scuderi’s Split-Cycle Engine Scuderi Group
Split cycle engines-engines that split the functions of a normal four-cycle piston into two separate but adjacent and complementary pistons-have never been able to match the efficiency and overall function of traditional internal combustion engines, but a new design could change all that. By tweaking the standard split-cycle design with new features like a compressed air tank that captures wasted energy from the system, the Scuderi Group claim not only to have …

Four-Links – cross-country Caddy, Kaija Kalevala, Fuel Tank, The Green Book

* From canada.com last week came this story of Kaija Kalevala, a Finnish emigre to Canada who did what few to zero other women did in the 1940s and 1950s: drive a truck for a living and raced stock cars in her spare time. Sounds like she was pret…

EPA approves higher percentage ethanol fuel for some vehicles

As should come as no surprise, the EPA approved a higher percentage of Ethanol to be mixed into gasoline for vehicles made between 2001 and 2006. Automakers were none too pleased, and said they would probably contest the decision in court. E-15, which can contain an ethanol content of 15% mixed into gasoline was approved for use last October in cars made in 2007 or later. Now the EPA has extended that to include the aforementioned vehicles.
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said that after ‘thorou…
