They Found Gemballa: Shot In The Head

About a year ago, a mutual friend introduced me to Uwe Gemballa. He looked a bit like a pimp from central casting: bleached blond hair, a flashy watch,  gold chain. He tuned Porsches. He wanted to import Gemballas to China, and could I help him? Like many China deals, that deal never got off the [...]

Lost & Found: The Corn Flakes Cartercars

Researching Pierce Arrows (and if anyone knows the second and third gear transmission ratios for the 1909-’10 four speed on a 6-36 I’d like to hear about it), I ran across a short note in the Realm of the Makers column in the February 24, 1910, issue of The Automobile which mentioned,
The Cartercar Company at the Detroit Automobile Show received an order from the Kellogg Toasted Corn Flakes Company, of Battle Creek, for twenty-four Cartercars, model “H,” touring type. Instead of …

Found on the Interwebs: 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro

All-wheel-drive road cars, up until relatively recently, have been a little thin on the ground. Jensen came on the scene first with the FF, sporting Ferguson Formula AWD and Dunlop Maxaret mechanical anti-lock brakes. Jensen’s limited production capabilities (as well as being, well, British) kept it a niche player. An oddity from a company famous for producing odd cars, it was the idiot brother to the already silly Interceptor.
American Motors later presented the Eagle sedan and station wagon. Th…

First Mars Landers Might Have Found Organic Material In 1976, and Destroyed It By Accident

Martian Surface The first image from the surface of Mars, taken by Viking 1 moments after it landed July 20, 1976. NASA
The building blocks of life might exist in Martian soil after all, according to a new study. Evidence from the late Phoenix Mars lander suggests its Viking forebears might have found organic compounds on the Red Planet – and destroyed them in the process of looking for them.
If this is true, it represents a monumental shift in the way scientists have thought about Mars for the past 30 y…

Lost and Found overflow – Darrin’s Illian and GM proposals

In the Lost and Found section in the issue of Hemmings Classic Car that should be landing in subscribers’ hands shortly (#74), I included a photo from Guy Cassaday of the full-size prototype of the car that Dutch Darrin designed for Israel-based Illian, a company that previously assembled Kaiser-Frazers there. I also noted that the photo may have been flipped, so I thought I’d also show it the other way ’round, as it was sent to me by former SIA scribe Leon Dixon. Benni Haspel, who liv…

Four-Links – Chilliwack Datsun, Group B Citation, IMS gears up for centennial, MI Special found

* Them young’uns at Hooniverse found a bunch of photos of Chilliwack Datsun in Chilliwack, British Columbia, and according to their eager commenters, the location is now the home of Campus Auto Sales on Yale Road West.

* We like the thinking behind Car Lust’s recent imagineering of a Chevrolet Citation into a Group B type rally car. What other commuter cars can you think of that would make for good Group B rally cars?

* We know the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s centennial is coming u…
