Porsche Details The New 911 GT3’s Engine And Gearbox: Video

The new Porsche 911 GT3 is the next 911 model to make its debut in the United States, and like the Type 991 versions of the 911 Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, it’s a better car in every regard than its (admirably quick) predecessor.
Out back, the 3.8-liter flat-six engine now benefits from direct injection, while receiving a stratospherically-high (for a production automobile engine, anyway) redline of 9,000 rpm. It cranks out 475 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque, sending this t…

This Day in History: Rudolf Diesel patents his engine

On February 23, 1892, Rudolf Diesel obtained German patent RP 67207, Arbeitsverfahren und Ausführungsart für Verbrennungsmaschinen (roughly, “Working process and realization method for internal combustion engines”) for his new compression-ignition engine design. The Diesel engine would prove immensely more mechanically efficient than contemporary steam engine designs, and quite adaptable. It’s still in common use today, particularly in European cars and modern tractor-trailer rigs.

Slow Dart Sales Cause Elimination of Shift at Dundee Engine Plant, There’s No Replacement For Displacement

The latest sign that the product planners and marketers at Fiat and Chrysler have muffed the launch of the Dodge Dart is the announcement that their Dundee, Michigan engine plant that builds the Dart’s turbocharged 1.4 liter Multiair FIRE engine has fired or reassigned 58 employees and is eliminating a second shift. The shift reduction follows remarks at the 2013 NAIAS media preview by Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne blaming poor Dart sales on the powertrain offerings. “The powertrain solutions we m…

BMW Exec Confirms Two-Cylinder Motorcycle Engine for i3 REx

A BMW official has confirmed that the range-extender engine to be offered as an option on the battery-powered i3 supermini will be a two-cylinder gasoline unit sourced from the brand's motorcycle division and not the upcoming, larger displacement 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine developed for the Bavarian group's automobiles. The World’s Most Famous V8 Engine

Chevrolet was not the first American manufacturer to build a V8 engine, that distinction goes to Cadillac (1914), but Chevrolet certainly has built the most famous one. Today some 105 million V8 engines of varying displacements have been built by Chevrolet and the tradition continues today.

The story of the Chevrolet V8 goes back to the early 1950s. These were the days of cheap gasoline and beginning of the horsepower wars. 1953 was the year that Chevrolet introduced the Corvette sportscar with a …

What you need to know about engine oil

There are a few misconceptions out there about engine oil. "Synthetic" oil seldom means that there's no petroleum products in it, the "W" in the viscosity numbers doesn't stand for "weight," and "severe usage," when you should change your oil more frequently, could mean that you're not using your car all that often. Read more about engine oil and its properties in my Sympatico Autos story by clicking here.

Ford Bringing 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine To U.S. Market

Ford’s 1-liter EcoBoost engine – image: Ford Motor Company
If we asked you to name cars that used a three-cylinder engine, you’d probably pick the Smart ForTwo without much trouble. If you’ve been around cars as long as we have, you’d remember that the Geo Metro, Chevrolet Sprint, Suzuki Swift and Subaru Justy all came with fuel-efficient three-banger engines.
They all had one other thing in common, too – they were (or are) near-dangerously underpowered, and deliver zero amuseme…
