Thread of the Day: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Base Model or Loaded Diesel?

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s styling updates are mostly subtle, but the SUV received substantial upgrades under the hood – and in the transmission tunnel. A new 240-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 joins the 3.6-liter V-6, 5.7-liter V-8, and SRT model’s 6.4-liter V-8 on the engine roster. All engines are backed by a new eight-speed automatic [...]

2013 Geneva: Mitsubishi’s GR-HEV Concept is a diesel hybrid pickup truck for emerging markets

Mitsubishi’s spotlight at this year’s 2013 Geneva Motor Show consists of the world debut of two new hybrid concept models. The first one we’re tackling is the all-new 2013 Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept hybrid-electric vehicle.
Built to be a conceptual successor to one of Mitsubishi’s most famous pickup trucks, the 1978 Mitsubishi L200, the new GR-HEV Concept hopes to set a new standard for alternative propulsion in the compact pickup truck segment.
Under the hood sits a tradition 2.5L diesel engine, …

Infiniti Q50 Lands in Europe with Merc’s 168HP 2.2-liter Diesel and 359HP Hybrid Version

The brand-new Infiniti Q50, which made its world debut at the Detroit Motor Show last January, made its European premiere in Geneva and, according to the manufacturer, it is its “most significant car yet for the European marketplace”. That’s because the rear-wheel drive sedan is designed to compete in the compact premium class where it will face some stiff opposition. Since most Europeans opt for diesel engines, the Q50 will be available in the Old Continent with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodie…

Video: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel brings efficiency and rumble

For years, the Jeep Grand Cherokee just didn’t live up to the model’s substantial nameplate equity. A top-to-bottom 2011 redesign set things straight, rewarding the post-bankruptcy Chrysler with strong sales. Now a 2014 mid-cycle update brings more refinements and improvements for the popular and well-rounded Jeep, including a new diesel-engine option.

You can argue the value of the new front and rear fascias; I prefer the pre-facelift styling to this new fussy treatment. But the changes go far deeper….

120 Years Since Patent, Diesel Power is Being Realized

As many are aware, the gasoline engine dominated the past century-worth of motoring. Steam power disappeared in the 1920s while electric cars lost early 20th century momentum. Throughout the time gasoline power has held a stranglehold of the automobile marketplace, there had been one other propulsion choice making a small but effective impact. It was February 23rd of 1893 when a German inventor named Rudolf Diesel received the patent for his unique engine. Through a combination of trial…

This Day in History: Rudolf Diesel patents his engine

On February 23, 1892, Rudolf Diesel obtained German patent RP 67207, Arbeitsverfahren und Ausführungsart für Verbrennungsmaschinen (roughly, “Working process and realization method for internal combustion engines”) for his new compression-ignition engine design. The Diesel engine would prove immensely more mechanically efficient than contemporary steam engine designs, and quite adaptable. It’s still in common use today, particularly in European cars and modern tractor-trailer rigs.
