American compact cars simply aren’t what they used to be. Six years ago, we tested five $20,000 compact sedans including a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt LS and a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 ST. Driven with a Kia Spectra SX, Mazda3 S, and Toyota Corolla XRS.
The Chevrolet and Ford placed fifth and fourth, respectively.
Today, the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus compacts have a much greater chance at competing with the leaders in the growing segment. Then and now, we’ve been impressed by the increasing number …

Thanks to the worldwide web of ours, we now have some video of the one and only (so far) recall-inducing 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. For the full story, check out our previous post here. The nitty-gritty is that a guy, his wife, one of their mothers, and their 19-month-old son were in the car when the steering wheel decided it wasn't really needed anymore and took a hike…at 65 miles per hour. As I’ve explained many times before, it can be very difficult to know when a recall is worth covering. Drawing too many conclusions from a single defect can be dangerous, as defects are a fact of any industry that balances quality and cost as closely as the auto business. But in this case, I’ve received [...]

Following a single incident on March 1, 2011, when a GM was notified of a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze that had been brought to one of its dealerships with a steering wheel that had come loose from the steering column, the Detroit automaker decided to issue a voluntary recall on certain Cruze vehicles. According to GM, during manufacturing, the steering wheel might have been improperly fastened and could detach from the steering column. General Motors is recalling 2,100 Chevy Cruze sedans from model year 2011, after a steering wheel on one vehicle came loose because it was improperly installed. If this occurred while the vehicle was being driven, it could lead to a crash. No injuries or accidents have been tied to the steering issue.
GM reported that it has inspected some 2,000 Cruzes at manufacturing plants but has not found similar problems. In March, GM issued a notice to dealers asking them to inspect unsold Cruze vehicles, accordi…

The cheapest Chevy Cruze is a competent small sedan, but little more.
What we have here is some genuine grammatical monkey business: a Cruze with no cruise. Such are the peculiarities of product planning in the economy-car segment, where sticker price is even more of a motivator than in other, less necessity-driven classes. Case in point: the new Volkswagen Jetta, which has been critically maligned for its bean-counter design but is selling better than its more-upscale predecessor.

Due to a tough economy and elevated gas prices, small car popularity is on the rise. Chevrolet finally has a competitive entry with its Cruze sedan, the welcomed replacement to the low-scoring Cobalt. To see how far Chevrolet has progressed, we purchased two Cruzes for testing–a base 1.8-liter, four-cylinder and an up-level 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder. They are featured in the May issue of CR.
It turns out that both versions offer similar fuel economy at 26 mpg overall, which is on the lower …

Getting a competitive compact car to the market can be considered one of General Motors’ most recent triumphs, and it appears to be paying off in the never-ending sales race.
Though final March sales figures are due tomorrow, GM was eager to share the expected success of the Chevrolet Cruze. Through February of this year, Chevy has managed to push 32,187 Cruzes into the hands of new owners. That number is expected to make it past 50,000 for first quarter 2011.
It’s easy to see why GM is bullish on i…
