Cars are not simply about getting from Point A to Point B. Cars can define a time in history, influence our culture, even change our perception of what we want, or expect from a car. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Volkswagen Beetle stands in an elite group of one of the most significant automobiles of the 20th century. Yet, the Beetle rests a bit uncomfortably from the very country who invented it. And this is where automotive culture kicks in. The history of the Beetle is well known. Adolf Hitler ask…

As tribute to a special-edition 1970s Beetle that today’s younger VW diehards may only vaguely aware of, Volkswagen’s new Beetle GSR might not deliver the heritage punch the company has in mind. It should, however, appeal to older folks who remember the original Gelb Schwarzer Renner—“Yellow Black Racer”—and perhaps even people who just like their cars to resemble bumblebees. READ MORE ››

Sometimes things sound better on paper than they do in the real world. Take the Pontiac Aztek, for instance.
Autosavant was invited to the global media launch for the all-new 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible in Los Angeles. As an east coast dweller, the notion of visiting sunny Southern California in late November certainly had appeal. Plus, I’d have the opportunity for my first-ever visit to the Los Angeles Auto Show if I could work out my schedule. Well, everything worked out sche…

The Volkswagen Beetle was conceived and developed mainly for the U.S. market, but that doesn’t mean that Europe takes a back seat when it comes to new ideas and additions of the lineup. VW has just announced “Exclusive” trims for Continental-market coupes and convertibles that will sit atop the Beetle’s “Design” and “Sport” models in the lineup.
Exclusive Beetles include 18-inch wheels as standard; the optional 19-inch wheels have white or black accents….

These are the first pictures of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet. It will make its public debut at the LA motor show in November. The Beetle Cabriolet features a soft-top which folds in ten seconds. Unlike the car it replaces, the roof “lies very flat, enabling good vision to the rear”.Seven engine options will be available, closely mirroring the hatchback model. A 103bhp 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine will be available from launch, with a Bluemotion Technology version soon after. A 158bhp 1….

The new Beetle – which is no longer the New Beetle – is a nice car to drive, but alas, it's lost that funky charm that made the last model so much fun. Read my review in the Toronto Star by clicking here.

To everyone here that reads my articles, you’ll know that I’m not a fan of the Volkswagen Beetle, or any car that realizes the majority of its sales because the buyer says “it’s cute.” And since the Beetle was reintroduced to the market in 1998, it’s undergone so few changes that any non-Beetle enthusiast wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a 1998 model and one made 12 years later in 2010.
I mean, look at this:
These two cars were made eleven years a…

My wife doesn’t know a lot about cars, but she does humor me from time to time when I excitedly share car industry news with her. “Hey, remember the A7 that I tested last summer? They’re going to have an S8 that has the same gorgeous body, but a twin-turbo V8 under the hood. Sweet, right?” “If that makes you happy, then I guess that’s good, dear.” Yet I often find her perspective to be valuable as a second opinion or a gut check when I am evaluatin…
