Car Tuning Trends through the Decades: 1960s-2000s

Car tuning is the modification of stock vehicles and cars from their original
manufacturing. Car tuning alters the vehicle in some way- either to make it look different
or to perform better or differently from the original performance. Car tuning did not gain
popularity until vehicles became a part of everyday society after the 1950s. It was not
until the 1960s that many families even had vehicles- much less vehicles that they tried to
modify in some way.

Take a look back at some of the major car tuning trends that happened in each decade
from 1960 to the present.

1960s

The 1960s brought about the first car tuning trends. In that decade, car tuning was all
about making the vehicle, faster, better, and flashier- hot rod style. 1960s car enthusiasts
took older vehicle models from the 1940s and earlier, like the Model T and Model B and
fine-tuned them for optimal performance and style. Many of the vehicles of the day had
open engines and fenderless designs.

1970s

The hot rod trend continued through the 1970s, but car tuning took a trend towards other
styles near the end of the decade. One of the most popular tuning trends in the 1970s was
influenced by German design and style. German-style vehicle tuning is less about the
exterior of the vehicle and more about the interior. Car tuners added engine and exhaust
upgrades with a few changes to the exterior styling of the vehicle, such as larger wheels,
dropped chassis, and clean lines.

1980s

The 1980s were all about grunge and industrial looks and the popular car tuning styles
were no different. Many car tuners turned to simply upgrading the engine and other
components of the vehicle regardless of how the exterior of the car looked. This lead to
a number of beat-up vehicles with fast engines and other upgrades. Another tuning style
popular in the 1980s was the low rider trend. Low riding lowered the body of the vehicle
as close to the ground as possible. When hydraulics were first introduced, they became
wildly popular combined with the low rider tuning style.

1990s

The 1990s saw some changes to the car tuning trends of the decade. One of the main
trends in the 1990s was extreme tuning. Extreme tuning is more about the exterior of
the vehicle than the interior. Add-ons like scissor doors, TVs, flip body panels, giant
speakers, and other cosmetic modifications are added to make the vehicle stand out on
the road. On the other side, the trend was for clean tuning, where the car looks normal,
but has performance-enhancing upgrades to the engine and other components of the car.

2000s

Today, you can find a mix of nearly every car tuning style ever invented. One popular
trend is the racing tuning style, which transforms regular stock cars into flashy vehicles

that look more like racers than street cars. The dub style of tuning is also popular today,
which focuses on upgrades to the exterior of the vehicle, like large wheels, excessively
tinted windows, and unusual car light colors.

Just like any other hobby, car tuning trends come and go through the decades. Right
now, there is huge freedom in the way you can tune your car. There are no restrictions on
modifications to design, appearance, performance, and any other element of the vehicle.
