Los Angeles, 1966

When do they start flipping cars and burning couches? According to the caption that went with this photo on the UCLA Library’s Digitial Collections site, these are UCLA students “rampaging” in November 1966 on the San Diego Freeway near Wilshire Boulevard after learning that USC was going to the Rose Bowl. Amongst the riot in progress, traffic has stalled, giving us a good carspotting opportunity. What do you see here?

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly Of the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show

Years ago, the Los Angeles International Auto Show was held much closer in the calendar to the Detroit show.  Then a few years ago, organizers moved the show earlier, to late November, in order to create some separation between the two shows.  LA now has a personality all its own compared to Detroit – there’s much more emphasis on green energy and import brands than in Detroit, or even New York and Chicago.  Those I spoke with who attended this year’s LA show noted that it just…

Los Angeles, 1976

How many transit strikes has Los Angeles gone through? We’ve already seen photos of one in 1955, and from the UCLA Library’s digital collections, we see that it had another one in September 1976. Shot was taken looking south on Spring Street, which still has a bus lane. What do you see here?

Los Angeles, 1977

Seven years separate the traffic jam shots we showed a few weeks ago and today’s set, all found at the Los Angeles Public Library‘s online photo archive, and we don’t see that traffic’s improved one bit. Here, the jam has moved to the Harbor Freeway just south of the Santa Monica Freeway (likely shot from the 23rd Street or 21st Street bridges over the Harbor). What do you see in these scenes?

Los Angeles, 1951 and 1966

More fish-in-a-barrel traffic shots from the Los Angeles Public Library’s online photo archive. First up, a shot taken to illustrate the dangers of driving at dusk, dated February 12, 1966, no location given. You know how everybody claims they could identify cars by their headlamps and taillamps back in the good ol’ days? If you’re one of those folks, then have at it.

Returning to the daytime, a shot looking north on Broadway toward the Hall of Justice, dated 1951. What do you see her…
