We drive the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to see if it is sporty and efficient

You may not have heard, but BMW now offers its luxurious 5 Series sedan as hybrid. We recently spent a few days with a BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to see if it lives up to the promise and share our first impressions.

The car was borrowed from BMW for a fee. The German carmaker’s latest foray into the world of hybrids behaves a lot like the slick 535i we tested in 2010, and it uses the same smooth-and-punchy turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine. With its electric drive motor, combined horsepower cli…

BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Adds Power, Shaves 0-60 Time

In the luxury segment, hybrids have often been used as a way to offer increased performance without sacrificing fuel economy. An example of this was Lexus. The previous generation GS 450h was pitched as a performance model. They’ve been trending away from this though, changing approach with hybrid versions of the new GS and upcoming ES.
BMW has announced the ActiveHybrid 3, and fitting for BMW, it has a performance twist. In fact, 0-60 times are faster than any of the other models in the lineu…

SPY SHOTS: New BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Based on the F30 3-Series

We've brought you plenty of news on BMW's upcoming iteration of its bread-and-butter 3-Series, but our spies have just snagged what they believe to be an early prototype of the hybrid version that will join the recently announced ActiveHybrid 5 and the already available ActiveHybrid X6 and 7. While the prototype model captured on the 'Ring looks pretty much stock, our man with the long lens tells us that it features the mandatory hybrid stickers to warn emergency crews about the car's el…

2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5: A BMW Hybrid That Almost Makes Sense

With this 535i-based gas-electric, BMW finally moves toward mainstream hybrid appeal.
BMW’s earlier steps into hybridization haven’t been the most decisive. The hybrid vehicles it has offered so far start at nearly $90,000 and don’t quite have the impressive fuel-economy numbers commonly associated with hybrids. The hybrid 7-series is rated by the EPA at 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway; the now-cancelled X6 hybrid, 17/19. (The upcoming i8 plug-in hybrid sports car will certainly better th…
