Preliminary NHTSA report on Toyota unintended acceleration cases

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is still in the early stages of its investigation into unintended acceleration in Toyotas. As part of the continuing investigation, the agency conducted 58 field inspections of Toyota vehicles in which unintended acceleration incidents are alleged to have occurred. A preliminary report from NHTSA stressed that while the agency has drawn no conclusions about additional causes of unintended acceleration in Toyotas beyond the two defects alread…

U.S. Transportation Dept. says electronics are not to blame in Toyota’s unintended acceleration

Ever since Toyota’s acceleration recall woes begun, it has stayed firm on its statement that faulty electronics are not to blame for unintended acceleration in its vehicles. A government investigation released today confirmed Toyota’s statement that no safety defects beyond problems with accelerator pedals explain reports of sudden acceleration.
A review by the government, while still at an early stage, shows that electronic systems are not to blame for the problem.

Convicted Man Goes Free With Help From Toyota’s Unintended Acceleration Woes

The debacle and the media circus surrounding Toyota’s high-profile unintended acceleration troubles has given new life to a Minnesota man previously convicted of vehicular homicide.Four years ago, Koua Fong Lee was behind the wheel of a 1996 Toyota Camry when it struck an Oldsmobile Ciera from behind, killing all three of the Oldsmobile’s occupants — a man and two young children. During his defense, Lee insisted he was stepping on the brakes but the Camry wouldn’t slow or stop. He was eventually convict…

A Single Pedal for Braking and Acceleration, to Prevent Accidents

Naruse’s Single-Pedal Design
An invention that’s been around for two decades, but is only now getting any real attention, could change the way millions of people drive — if people ever have the good sense to adopt it, its inventor says. Japanese inventor Masuyuki Naruse claims that placing the braking and acceleration pedals in our cars side-by-side, just inches apart, is a dangerous design flaw. The solution: his Naruse pedal, a unified pedal design that puts accelerator and brake on the same foot-ac…

Court Documents Show Toyota Ignored Sudden Acceleration Reports From Own Technicians

Lawsuit says Toyota kept acceleration defects a secret, states electronic throttle is to blame

A lawsuit filed on Monday claims that Toyota knew about the sudden acceleration problems in its vehicles as far back as 2003, but concealed the defects from consumers and officials. The suit makes the claim that the electronic throttle is to blame for the acceleration issues.
The suit seeks class-action status in U.S. District Court in California on behalf of consumers and businesses that either bought or leased Toyota vehicles manufactured on American soil that have electronic throttle control systems…
