J.D. Power says Sept. sales are stronger, will be 29% higher than 2009

After a less than stellar summer, U.S. auto dealerships have been seeing a turnaround in September, according to J.D. Power and Associates. The firm expects total car and truck sales to reach 961,500 for the month; 29% higher than last year. Last year’s sales however, were markedly low due to the recession and the Cash-for-Clunkers program run last summer.
“The vigorous start to September is an indication that vehicle buyers delayed some of their purchases in late August, and were most likely…

Distraction-related fatalities represented 16% of overall traffic fatalities in 2009

United States Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and President Barack Obama
With the increasingly widening range of mobile technology devices we use and our constantly on-the-go lifestyles, it is no wonder that the number of roadway accidents occurring as the result of distracted driving is staggering and out of control. It is estimated by the DOT that 5,474 lives were lost last year as a result of distracted drivers. Another 448,000 injuries were also the result of the same. The above number rep…

GM recalling over 20,000 Cadillac CTS, CTS-V from 2009, 2010 model year

2009 Cadillac CTS
General Motors announced that it is recalling 20,224 model year 2009 and 2010 Cadillac CTS all-wheel-drive and CTS-V Sedans due to the possibility of potential for leg injuries in some crashes. In letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GM said that the CTS doesn’t comply with federal safety requirements in terms of how well they protect smaller, unseatbelted passengers from leg injuries.
“In the event of a crash, if a small occupant is in the front pas…

Our Cars: 2009 BMW 335d – Great Cruising Range, But Needs a Diesel Locator

After a weekend trip to Santa Barbara with the 2009 BMW 335d, I won’t repeat everything that’s been said about the BMW’s solid steering, handling, and braking, but I did have a few issues.First, Bluetooth and auto-dimming interior mirrors remain optional on a car with a base price now approaching $45,000. That’s ridiculous. Also, as another staffer noted, it would sure be nice if BMW offered an easy-to-use diesel locator in the navigation system instead of just gas station icons. We followed the navigati…

Our Cars: 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T – Destination: Wine Country

With Labor Day weekend plans consisting of a wedding in Sonoma, California, I needed suitable transportation. The round trip on its own is just shy of 900 miles and much of that is on one of the most boring stretches of road in the entire state, the central California stretch of Interstate 5. I’d already done a fairly lengthy stint in our long-term Dodge Challenger R/T before, so I knew it was up to the task. That and our long-term BMW 335d was already spoken for.I was apprehensive about driving the enti…

Our Cars: 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T – Can’t Get a (Door) Handle on It

Had a chance to hop back into our long-term 2009 Dodge Challenger this week, and it’s been yet another enjoyable experience. As a born-and-bred Detroiter, I’ve always had a soft spot as big as a Challenger for American muscle cars, and it’s been great to watch the resurgence of the modern day Pony Car wars we’ve chronicled in depth in the pages of Motor Trend and on MT.com.Of the new Mustang, Camaro and Challenger, I really enjoy simply tooling around in the Challenger. Not attacking the twisties or layi…

Our Cars: 2009 BMW 335d – No Range Anxiety Here

Recent news reports have suggested that General Motors is on the verge of trademarking the term “Range Anxiety” as it develops its marketing plan for the coming Chevrolet Volt (will that thing just get here already? Geez…) against its coming all-electric competition led by the Nissan Leaf (same with this, less press releases, more production, please). Owners of the 2009 BMW 335d? They scoff at the term.During its stay here, multiple editors have embarked on longish journeys in the 3 diesel, and we’ve f…
