New Car: 2011 Kia Optima

Kia has now added these official images to the previously released quartet of renderings, but the company is still playing coy with information on its upcoming, completely redesigned 2011 Optima sedan. The car will make its official debut at the New York auto show this April. Kia claims that the new car’s “significantly longer” wheelbase will be accompanied by more space for people and cargo, which now looks more evident in these images than the early renderings, which had sliver-like windows…

Photographic Retrospective: F1 – Bahrain 2010

There were dozens of stories inexorably interwoven into today’s Bahrain GP, the start of the 2010 Formula 1 season. To try to list them all would be an injustice to all the ones we would undoubtedly skim over. So instead, let’s take a recap of the race weekend through a photographer’s lens.
For those of you who are more casual observers of the sport and who aren’t up on all the intricacies of the politics and happenings, all you need to know is that Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso won the Bahrain G…

A Reliable 1965 Austin-Healey Sprite For Sale

Ah, the bug-eyed Sprite. They are fun little cars, and I’ve spent more than my fair share around them. You had to stow what cargo you were foolish enough to bring along via sliding the seats forward and passing things into the rear-most compartment. And was that the same location for that secondary fuse box? Or am…

VIDEO: Audi R8 is the chosen chariot for snowy excursions

New York Times and Automobile contributor Ezra Dyer may have found the perfect German exotic for New England winters: the Audi R8. True, the R8 is pretty low to the ground, but it also makes good use of Audi’s superb Quattro all-wheel drive system and thanks to its mid-engine layout much of the weight sits over the rear wheels. But even the best AWD is useless when providing spin for four summer tires, so the snow white model Dyer was piloting around the northeast winter wonderland also had four o…

SIA Flashback – Gas-Saving Gadgets and Gimmicks, Part 2

Where in part 1 of his story, Roy Ames outlined the various small-potatoes, back-of-the-magazine ways in which hucksters tried to sell fuel-saving devices, in part 2, from SIA #65, October 1981, Ames goes after the more well-known fuel-saving schemes, including Louis Enricht, the Fish carburetor and the Pogue carburetor. Under Ames’s analysis, only the latter was a legitimate attempt at creating a high-mileage carburetor.

Alfa Romeo Montreal: Design Student Resurrects Marcello Gandini’s 1970s Coupe

As talented as any designer may be, it’s never easy to update an original classic such as Marcello Gandini’s 1970s Alfa Romeo Montreal sports coupe. Sao Paulo Indy 300 after suffering a broken back during practice at Infineon

“It’s been …
