$100,000 Fantasy Garage Challenge: Anthony Cagle

You know, when this topic was first broached I thought the process would be about as exciting as painting the living room. But once I started I found it a lively little exercise in pushing the boundaries of getting as much as possible without going over budget. There's only two of us in the household so I was looking at a minimum of two vehicles; I've already got a true Car Lust car so I wasn't about to get a stable of Pacers, Hornets, and F-body Camaros and Firebirds. So I went mostly new an…

The BMW i3 Looks to Boost Electric Range

The BMW i3 is one of the newest models that the German automaker is expecting to manufacture for the North American market in the coming year. What is unique about it, and allows it to stand out from other models that BMW currently offers, is it is a purely electric vehicle. The problem that BMW is facing is that they are beginning to jump on this electric gravy train a bit later than expected. Because of their late integration of this new technology, they find that the expected 60-90 charged elect…

Who was Von Dutch?

Despite all the T-shirts and hats that made the rounds a few years ago with the Von Dutch logo on them, he wasn't a clothing designer, or a motorcycle company, or any of the other things that those wearing the clothes might have thought.
Instead, he was a pinstriper, and perhaps the one who really made this style of custom car adornment fashionable. He was immensely talented, but he was also a tormented and difficult man. Read more about him in my Sympatico Autos story by clicking here.

U.S. Army Starts Planning For An Armored Vehicle That Skydives

U.S. soldiers prepping a C-130 drop zone ramp US Army via Wikimedia CommonsSeventeen years since retiring its last tank capable of air drop, the U.S. Army is in the early stages of developing a new one. Armored vehicles are incredibly useful in battle. But they are difficult to transport to remote locations (where many confrontations take place) because they skydive very poorly. You would too if you were 50 tons of clanking machinery. The armored vehicle geeks at the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellen…

Name That Shifter, No. 117: 1972 Lotus Europa

On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. A few of you figured out that this week’s shifter belongs to a Lotus Europa, but the first commenter to correctly specify it as a 1972 model was repeat winner Jake S.
The Europa pictured here is from our photo archives, but we reviewed one in our May 1968 issue. Despite its exotic looks and fine driving manners, the Lotus failed to impress long-time editor David E. Davis, Jr. This…

Even before our long-term 2013 Scion FR-S arrived, WOT staffers were already preparing their wish list of modifications — bigger tires, new suspension, forced induction, and exhaust upgrades, just to name a few possibilities. I was both hopeful and worried—does the FR-S really need all that stuff? My first stint in the FR-S was a [...]
